Even with our lips closed, our body is speaking - Part Two

The most important considerations are eye contact and body posture.
The next most important areas to be aware of are your head, arms and legs.
HEAD
How you hold your head can also send a message to your listeners. A head that is held straight both vertically and horizontally depicts confidence and authority.
However, when you are sharing a friendlier, intimate conversation, a gentle tilt of the head can denote interest.
ARMS
Connected to the head are the arms, well, via the neck and stuff. But the arms allow for all kinds of communication. Arms at the side or behind you can indicate self-assurance and openness to the subject that is being discussed. Those most confident will use bigger arm movements while shy speakers will tend to have small movements or none at all. Find a comfortable balance. Arm movements that are too big can detract from what you are saying. And of course, crossed arms are a sign of disapproval.
LEGS
The two other big appendages we have are our legs. When you are standing, they are part of your posture, but did you ever wonder what message your legs send when you are sitting?
The bouncing leg is a sign of nervousness, it is best to keep them as still as possible. How do you cross your legs? Demurely at the ankle? Gently at the knee
? Or do you bring your foot up to the cross the other leg? This is called the "figure four" and is considered a very defensive motion. What messages are you sending with your arms and legs? Tomorrow, we'll conclude with a discussion on facial features and personal distance. Until then, be aware of the messages others are sending you as you have a conversation in the office or at home.
