How to Fire an Employee(s)

I have been laid off and have laid employees off, which is getting fired in actuality. I cannot even come close to implementing such a thing as the firm quoted below did.
radio shack fires 400 employees by email
Radio Shack emailed layoff Tuesday morning to 400 of its workers at the Forth Worth Texas headquarters. The company had warned on 10 August that it would cut hundreds of jobs.
Employees were warned that the job layoffs would be sent via email. Hourly workers received up to 16 weeks of severance pay, while higher-paid salary workers were given 36 weeks.
Early warning or not this is just not right. What do you think?

Agreed. This is so not classy. Where were these employees’ managers in all this? Each manager should talk to his employees, explaining that it’s a layoff, explaining severance, explaining benefits, answering questions.
