IM offers genuine business benefits such as improved productivity and collaboration, it's truly 'instant' and it can save on bandwidth consumption.
Gartner estimates that IM can reduce long distance calls by 30 per cent, reduce email usage by 40 per cent and lead to a 15 per cent reduction in voicemail usage.
Teams that collaborate using a instant messageing software like msn messenger or GoogleTalk generate more ideas than those who reply on email instead according to the Journal of Computer Standards and Interfaces.
