Website Statistics: So What?

I was having an interesting conversation with a customer today. We were talking about website statistics:

Unique visits
Hits
Key words and phrases

I said that I had a standing appointment with myself to review the statistics each month. I also analyze the reports from Mail Chimp each time I send an e-Newsletter.

He asked an interesting question:

"After you review the statistics, what do you do with the information?"

So my unique visits are up 10% – so what?

More people found me through web writing than freelance writer – so what?

Do you actually DO anything with the information. I had to be honest and say "no." Certainly I am reviewing my site and each month I do a little something to it – adding the newsletter, an MP3 file, a new page, but can I say that I'm making changes based on the website statistics.

No.

So I ask you: first, do you review your statistics and if so – what do you do with the information?

I found this article that sheds a little light on making sense of web statistics, but I'd also be interested in anything you are doing.
