When is it Time To Quit?

But if I've learned one thing from consultant guru, Alan Weiss, and trust me I've learned far more than one thing, it's this:
"80 and go"
Get it to 80% and then go because if you keep nitpicking, you'll never get anywhere.
Well today I came across someone who clearly doesn't abide by that rule. It's Gary Duschl of Virginia who currently holds the record for the longest gum chain ever.
Do you remember sitting in class in elementary school
repurposing the wrappers from the gum you weren't suppose to be chewing and creating a chain that you'd turn into a bookmark or bracelet or if you were really patient, a necklace?Well, Gary started his gum chain in 1965 and it is now over 9 MILES LONG.
Why do you care?
I guess the lesson is this:
There are times when 80% and go works - when you are writing an article or creating a website or building a brand. Let's face it - none of those things bring in cash. If you are waiting for the perfect logo before you call on your first customer, you might as well get a job at Wal-mart because you are focusing on the wrong things. And nothing against Wal-mart - I was just there about an hour ago.
But there are other times, when sticking with something, like learning a new instrument or High Pointing all the states or, yes, making the longest gum chain, that perseverance and stick-to-it-ive-ness is a good thing.
Check out Gary and his gum chain.
