Other than selling something, supporting something or to give contact information, why would a business have a website? And assuming I'm correct, why aren't business websites more oriented to sell and support whatever they offer?
Most business websites are about the business itself, not about the customers they serve. Oddly, that's the site visitor most sought.
I think businesses would get more out of their web presence if they oriented everything on their site to either converting a prospect or supporting a customer. It's obvious, but rarely done.
What do you think? Are business websites too focused on themselves and not enough on their customers? Could more emphasis be put on selling and supporting? Or should I get out more often and stop thinking about such nonsensical things?

I think that is elementary for a buisiness to have a website. Nowadays, Internet has a great development and it is maybe the most used media channel. So, in my opinion, a website is necessary!

The Internet is connecting advertisers and marketers to customers from Boston to Bali with text, interactive graphics, video and audio. That's why a website is welcome to any business, but if the business websites are not oriented to the customers but only to the business itself problems may occur. For instance, an e-commerce site lost millions of dollars because overly aggressive homepage promotions made users distrust the price of any product that was not on sale.

Very good point. I think, that small business owners are simply too busy with running their businesses to spend enough time online to properly comprehend the value of Internet marketing/promotion.

"Why?" - "Not sure."
For example, if you are in a service type business, instead of carrying around brochures, today you can point people to your website. It is a great place for you to articulate clearly what you do.
However, if you are selling goods from your website, and need to attract customers, as you would do to a bricks and mortar business, then you would use totally different approach and tools to do this.
Point is that you need to start with a marketing strategy that clearly defines the role of the internet in your business.
