Will Employee Micro-Blogging Help Business?

Yammer: it's not a rare type of woodpecker or a new cocktail for yuppies. It's a micro-blogging tool similar to Twitter – but designed for businesses.

VentureBeat ran a story last week on the $5 million in VC funding yammer just got.

I'd be interested to hear specific ways that Yammer saves companies time and money – the usual requirement of business software. Lower phone bills? Less time reading email? It's not clear what sort of traction Yammer has gotten since it launched and took home the grand prize at the TechCrunch50 startup conference in August.

Yammer has tiered services. It's possible for individuals to use it for free. There are some higher end services that come when a company officially signs up to use Yammer – and at that point they start paying a buck per employee each month.

Yammer won $50K from a TechCrunch competition last year.

I think that Yammer, while a great concept, still has a lot of growing to do before it can be taken on as an employee mico-blogging pathway. I see many pros and cons to implementing such a service, and in the end, it’s all how the users decide to make use of it.
