Would You Take Flight Lessons From An Instructor That Never Piloted A Plane?
That would be silly. But the business corollary is hiring a consultant to grow your business that's never owned, operated or otherwise been wholly responsible for one. And that hiring takes place every day.
What do you think? Can someone that's never truly flown solo really understand what it's like to fly? Can a person that's never had to manage suppliers, partners, customers, shippers, employees, meet payroll or even manage the unthinkable…debt collectors…truly understand what it takes to grow a business?

You wouldn’t want to take flight training from someone who didn’t know how to fly, but you might find non-flying people who could help with some aspects of your learning process. An air traffic controller, for example, could provide you with a valuable perspective, and so could a mechanic or an aeronautical engineer.
Similarly, there should be room in the business curriculum for *some* people who have never been practicing businesspeople. The problem is that there are just too many of them, and too few of the other kind.

This is a very interesting comment and observation you made. It suggests there is greater value in having “walked in your shoes.”
I agree.
